In China, ginseng has always been regarded as the king of all herbs.

Paleogeologists and paleontologists infer that ginseng is one of the oldest relict plant on earth. In the Tertiary period (65 million-1.8 million years ago) when angiosperms were extremely prosperous on earth, ginseng was widely propagated in the plant kingdom. It is recognized that ginseng is distributed between 33 and 48 degrees north latitude in the world. Records in Chinese herbal literature confirm that the distribution of Chinese ginseng is consistent with the history of paleogeology and paleontology.

Ginseng is a perennial perennial root herb. Its main root is 30-60cm high, thick, fleshy, yellowish-white, cylindrical or spindle-shaped, with slightly branched below. Rhizome (reed head) is short and erect.

Ginseng stem erect, cylindrical, unbranched; The annual plant has only one leaf at the top of its stem and three leaflets, commonly known as " three flowers"; The biennial stem is still only one leaf, but has 5 leaflets, which is called " slap"; The three-year-old has two opposite compound leaves with 5 leaflets, called " dicotyledons"; The number of four-year-olds increased to 3 compound leaves with whorls, called " Dengtaizi". The number of five-year-olds increased to four compound leaves with whorls, called " four leaves"; Six-year-olds have five whorled compound leaves on the top of their stems, called " five leaves."

Ginseng compound leaves are palmately shaped, with 3-5 leaflets, and the middle 3 are nearly the same size with petiolules. The small leaves are oval or slightly obovate, 4-15 cm long, 2-6.5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, margin serrulate, a few bristles scattered on the upper vein, no hairs on the lower part, the lowest pair of leaflets very small, no petiolules.

Ginseng blooms in summer. The umbel has a single terminal leaf cluster, the total pedicel is 30 cm long, each inflorescence has more than 4-40 flowers, and the small pedicel is about 0.5 cm long. Bracts small, strip-lanceolate; Calyx bell-shaped, fused with ovary, lobes 5, green; Petals 5, ovate, entire, yellowish green; Stamens 5, filaments short; Pistil 1, ovary inferior, 2-loculed, style 2, upper part separated, lower part connate.

Ginseng berry is oblate, bright red when mature, and contains two semicircular seeds.

So, for the preservation method of ginseng.Ginseng is rich in sugar, mucilage and volatile oil. Therefore, it is easy to be affected with damp, suffused with oil, moldy, discolored and moth-eaten. There are several ways to store ginseng:

1. Conventional preservation method: For dried ginseng, it can be sealed with plastic bag to isolate air and stored in shade.

2. Drying method of hygroscopic agent: put a proper amount of desiccant, such as quicklime, charcoal, etc. at the bottom of airtight cylinder, cylinder and box, then wrap ginseng with paper, put it in, and cover it with a seal.

3. Cryopreservation: This is an ideal method. Ginseng should be dried in the sun before storage, and the best exposure time is between 9: 00 a.m. and 4: 00 p.m., but ginseng should not be exposed to the sun for a long time, and ginseng for medicinal use has reached a certain degree of dryness. Generally, ginseng only needs to be sunned for 1-2 hours in the afternoon. After it cools down, wrap it in a plastic bag, tie the bag tightly, and place it in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator, so it can be stored for a long time.
