Glutathione (GSH) is an antioxidant in plants, animals, fungi, and some bacteria and archaea. Glutathione is capable of preventing damage to important cellular components caused by reactive oxygen species such as free radicals, peroxides, lipid peroxides, and heavy metals. It is a tripeptide with a gamma peptide linkage between the carboxyl group of the glutamate side chain and cysteine. The carboxyl group of the cysteine residue is attached by normal peptide linkage to glycine. |

Glutathione is a tripeptide (cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid) found in surprisingly high levels—5 millimolar—concentrations in most cells.
Balance Between GSH and GSSG
GSH is made available in cells in 3 ways
The Principes of GSH for human
GSH is made available in cells in 3 ways:
1. De novo synthesis via a 2-step process catalyzed by the enzymes glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL) and glutathione synthetase (requires ATP).
2. Regeneration of oxidized GSSG to reduced GSH by glutathione reductase (requires NADPH).
3. Recycling of cysteine from conjugated glutathione via GGTP (requires NADPH).
Glutathione can directly inhibit the activity of tyrosinase, at the same time it can sweep away a large number of oxidative free radicals, prevent free radicals from activating tyrosinase, and can also be hydrolyzed into cysteine, which interferes with the synthesis of melanin. In other words, in the whitening process, it has the dual effects of "antioxidant" + "inhibition" at the same time.
Glutathione is also a small peptide with a molecular weight of 307 daltons (molecules greater than 500 daltons cannot cross the skin barrier). This means that the glutathione applied on the skin can be absorbed by the skin. Moreover, it is also an antioxidant component in human cells, which is easier to "pass through" the defense layer and enter the human body more easily.
